I've always said that the appreciation of art, in all forms, is purely down to personal tastes and therefore no one can, or should, tell you what is a 'classic' piece of literature, music or painting. I know that professional Art Critics would have us believe that Turner was a master of landscape painting and that one must be a philistine to not appreciate his work, but for me personally... I don't like it. It does nothing for me... And who has the right to say what is good and what is bad?
My own favourite artists are John Everett Milais and (rather bizarrely) Piet Mondrian. I've seen Milais work up close and personal at Tate Britain in London. His piece 'The order of release' is so lifellike it feels as if the people will move at any moment! And as for Mondrian (whose work I have seen in Tate Modern), I think it's his use of bright colours that I find most pleasing to my soul which is probably why, when I saw this in a local discount shop .....

... i just had to have it! :o)
It's only a small 30cm x 30cm print and cost a couple of pounds. However, as soon as I saw it, it immediately transported me to the seaside on a beautiful warm and bright summers day. Food for the soul eh...? ;o)
I also really like the colour combinations so, methinks I'll be using that for inspiration at some point too....
I also instantly fell in love with this...

...when I first saw it. Not only do I appreciate the sentiment, I also love the use of colours, text sizes and overall industrial feel of the piece as well. Again it's just a simple print from a local homewares shop that cost less than £10
I'd rather have these on my wall than a Turner any day of the week... ;o)
Art should be something that resonates in your soul, inspires you or just simply makes you happy. And if you like it, don't let anyone tell you you're a philistine..!
