I've been meaning to start a blog for some time now so I think the New Year is as good a time as any don't you think? Sooo... here goes! :o)
As the weather yesterday (i.e. New Years Eve) was dreadful, I decided to make something I've been meaning to for quite some time. I have no idea where the inspiration came from apart from my current obsession with making heart shaped everything and wanting to use some pom pom trim that I keep seeing in the local Hobbycraft shop.
Firstly I acquired some stiff card to make a big enough heart shaped template around 24 inches across, then set about using it to cut two large pieces of cream fabric into the shape of a heart...

Firstly I acquired some stiff card to make a big enough heart shaped template around 24 inches across, then set about using it to cut two large pieces of cream fabric into the shape of a heart...
I wanted to write the word LOVE across the front but use a Union Jack themed heart shape to represent the 'O' so I freehand drew the letters L, V and E to cut out and use as templates as well as yet another heart shape!
Just trying for size after cutting them out. Nothing worse that too small or too big eh? ;o) Pinned them to some red brushed cotton and cut them out. I'm bonding the letters to the heart with some heatbond so they stay put but I'll also decorate the outline of the letters with a zigzag stitch.
Cut out a heart from some scrap denim material using the small heart template and added some strips of white and red cotton to make a Union Jack. Tried to get it as accurate as I could!
Zigzag stitching around the outline of the letters in a red cotton to match. Tried using red metallic thread for a bit of extra sparkle but it didn't work out very well so I went back to using normal red cotton thread instead.
Finished stitching the letters and the Union Jack heart into place then sewed around the heart leaving a small gap for filling. After filling with hollowfibre filling I ladder stitched the opening shut.
And the finished article with red pom pom trimming hand stitched all around. I wanted to hand stitch the trim so as to keep the red band all around rather than sewing it in when I sewed together the heart.
This one's a keeper... :o)
